This notion of his doesn’t last long, and the reason behind it is a letter that he receives from his elder sister Tomoe Oreki. In the letter, his sister asks him to enter the Kamiyama High School Classic Literature Club. She feared getting disbanded as all the previous club members had graduated.

Being afraid to refuse his sister, Oreki enters the club hoping that he would be the only member of the club and that he could be alone owing to his character trait. But his expectations are proved to be wrong. This is because as he enters the club room, he sees a beautiful girl standing near the windows looking outside.

She notices Oreki and introduces herself as Eru Chitanda from Class 1-A and a member of the Classic Literature Club. Eventually, two of his old friends Satoshi Fukube and Mayaka Ibara, also join the club, and soon they begin their adventurous investigations.
