In the US, the Black Mafia Family (BMF) was a group that trafficked drugs and laundered cash. Demetrius “Big Meech” Flenory and Terry “Southwest T” Flenory established the Black Mafia Family in Southwest Detroit in 1985, and by 2000 they had established cocaine distribution sales throughout the United States thanks to their direct connections to Mexican drug cartels and Los Angeles-based drug source. The Black Mafia Family operated from two main hubs: one in Atlanta for distribution run by Demetrius Flenory and one in Los Angeles to handle the incoming shipments.
Beginning in the early 2000s, the Black Mafia Family, led by Demetrius Flenory, used BMF Entertainment as a front company to launder proceeds from the sale of cocaine and to establish its legitimacy. BMF Entertainment worked as a record label for their lone artist, Bleu DaVinci, as well as a promoter for several well-known hip-hop performers. Due to their extremely opulent lifestyles, Demetrius Flenory and the Black Mafia Family rose to fame in hip-hop popular culture.
The Flenory brothers were targeted by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) under the Continuing Criminal Enterprise Statute in 2005, and both were given 30 years in prison after the DEA indicted members of the Black Mafia Family. According to the prosecution, the Black Mafia Family made approximately $270 million from their business dealings.
