What is the Good Lord Bird Plot About?
Onion, a young slave from Kansas territory, encounters abolitionist John Brown in the opening scene of the novel, which takes place in 1856. Brown frees Onion and then enlists him in his army to fight for the abolition of slavery. They eventually intend to seize power in Harpers Ferry, a mission that goes horribly wrong. Onion and a few other people succeed in escaping, but Brown is apprehended and later put to death. To say goodbye to the “old man” and his spiritual father, Onion returns one last time.
