James Ponsoldt co-wrote, directed, and produced the 2022 American drama movie Summering. Lia Barnett, Lake Bell, Sarah Cooper, Ashley Madekwe, Madalen Mills, Megan Mullaly, Eden Grace Redfield, and Sanai Victoria are the film’s leading ladies. Bleecker Street issued it on August 12, 2022.
What’s the storyline?
The girls arrive across a dead man’s body in a field they frequently use. Dina convinces the girls that they should investigate his death on their own rather than report it to the police as Mari advises in order to protect their frightened mothers. The girls are juggling their concerns about starting middle school, their varied family circumstances and expectations, and their worry that their relationship might not be able to withstand the impending changes as they start to look into the potential causes of the man’s death.
Launch Date
It was reported in August 2021 that Stage 6 Films and Bleecker Street had acquired the rights to screen the movie in the United States and other nations, respectively. The first screening of the movie took place at the Sundance Film Festival on January 22, 2022. Originally scheduled for July 15, 2022, it will now be released on August 12, 2022.
Does Summering Make for Good TV?
This independent tween friendship narrative loses some of its effect due to the uneven tone and odd plot turns. The idea of “tweens on a mission,” which has riveted viewers for decades, has a lot to recommend it.
Whether it’s in Stand By Me or Stranger Things, it’s hard not to cheer for a group of preteens solving a mystery, despite the fact that they frequently engage in irresponsible, immature behavior.

Reception
On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie has a 36 percent approval rating based on 61 reviews, with an average rating of 4.8/10. “Summering is an innocuous enough coming-of-age narrative, but there are far superior — and far less sugary — entrants in this crowded category,” the website’s critics’ consensus states.
The movie received a favorable review from Pete Hammond of Deadline Hollywood, who stated, “There are things to speak about when the movie concludes. Additionally, it never talks down to the people who are reading it. The adults are actually the ones who most need to reconnect with their inner child. The movie received a favorable review from Fred Topel of United Press International, who stated that Summering “is like a feminine Amblin movie.”
Too much of Summering, however, plays out in an unpleasant middle ground: anchored neither in real world, nor in its protagonists’ restless, changeable imaginations, according to Guy Lodge of Variety, who gave the movie a bad review. The movie received a bad review from Angie Han of The Hollywood Reporter, who stated, “But regrettably, its potential for magic is dampened by uneven performances, unconvincing chemistry, and an uninteresting narrative.” Summering received a C- from Natalia Winkelman of Indie-Wire, who also said, “As is, Summering is too disjointed and stupid for us to really care.”
