The South Central California setting of the upcoming Hulu series “This Fool” is based on the real-life experiences of comedian Chris Estrada. The characters in this irreverent but lovable half-hour comedy are from Los Angeles’ working-class districts. The protagonist of the program is 30-year-old Julio Lopez (played by Chris Estrada), who continues to reside at his mother’s home. He is employed with the gang rehabilitation non-profit Hugs Not Thugs. The bond between Julio and his elder cousin Luis (Frankie Quinones), an ex-gang member who was released from prison after more than ten years, is the main focus of the narrative.
Along with Chris, other cast members of This Fool include Julia Vera as Julio’s grandmother Maria, Laura Patalano as his mother Esperanza, and Anna Lamadrid as his sister Rocio. Michelle Ortiz plays Julio’s on-and-off lover Maggie. The Sopranos alum Michael Imperioli, who as minister Payne at Julio’s NGO, is the main draw for many, including myself. To wake Luis up, Julio hits him. Julio is in charge of Group Hugs this week, so he can’t be late. Group therapy sessions at Hugs Not Thugs are known as Group Hugs, and they always conclude with all the gang members embracing one another. As per usual, Luis and Julio get into a play fight, and at this point, their juvenile conduct has grown tiresome.
Episode Analysis
Although some viewers may find the lack of character development in this episode disappointing, you have to give the writers credit for providing Julio and Luis with believable character faults. When he can use therapy to play the victim, Luis loves it. But when does he genuinely feel challenged? Therapy is obsolete.
Julio faces a similar challenge in that he doesn’t appear to be at all motivated to improve. The cousins would appear to be opposites at first glance. However, they are more alike than they might prefer to believe.
Perhaps things will have to go worse for both Julio and Luis before either of them will desire to improve.
