Guru Jagat, the founding father of Venice’s popular RA MA yoga studio and one-time celebrity clients like Alicia Keys, Kate Hudson, and Kelly Rutherford passed away this weekend. Jagat was an extraordinary yoga teacher. Born Katie Griggs in Colorado, friends who grew up with her told Vice she “always dreamt of being a rock star” and “always wanted to be famous.” She certainly accomplished that in L.A.’s yoga community as well as New York’s where RA MA also had a presence (and Mallorca). Jagat originally opened the Venice Ra Ma studio in 2013, and often preached–despite her commitment to spirituality—that making money – even getting rich- is not counteractive [sic] those beliefs. And she lived by that principle: starting at least seven companies of her own before age 30 which helped make this “yoga guru” one very successful woman indeed!
Jagat came to Los Angeles in 2003 when Yogi Bhajan instructed her to teach at Yoga West. He sent Jagat off with a letter and the name “Guru Jagat,” Sanskrit for “Bringer of Light to the Universe.” She conducted lectures at Harvard Divinity School, created her own business school, founded RA MA TV- which she hopes will become an international network devoted exclusively on women -and even launchedRA MAREcord company.(Jagat)
Jagat came to Los Angeles in 2003, when controversial yoga figure Yogi Bhajan instructed her to teach at Yoga West. He sent her off with a letter and the Sanskrit name “Guru Jagat” for “Bringer of Light” which she accepted reluctantly but later wore proudly as an honorific title from his gracefully accepting hands.
She has conducted lectures at Harvard Divinity School, created RA MA TV (a global media company), published books on women’s leadership societies and authored several workbooks teaching meditation techniques through simple breathing exercises.
